Does my gas boiler work in a power cut?
Why a boiler stops without power
A modern boiler is not just a flame. It uses electricity to start the burner, run the fan, push hot water round the radiators and read the thermostat. Take the power away and it cannot do any of these.
Oil boilers work the same way. Check your manual or ask a Gas Safe registered engineer if you are not sure about yours.
What about hot water?
- Combi boiler: hot water stops straight away, because it is heated only when you turn a tap on.
- Boiler with a hot water tank: the water already in the tank stays warm for a few hours.
Not sure which you have? If there is no tank or cylinder in the airing cupboard, it is probably a combi.
What may still work
- A gas hob usually still works if you light it with a match. Check yours now, not in the dark. See cooking in a power cut.
- Some gas fires work without power. Others have electric lighting or fans and will not. Check your manual.
Stay warm safely
The easiest plan is one warm room. Pick a small room with a door. Put blankets, coats and a hat there. Close the curtains at night and keep doors shut to hold the heat in.
Ten minutes to do now
- Find out if you have a combi boiler or a hot water tank.
- Pick your warm room and put spare bedding there.
- Check your carbon monoxide alarm works.
- Save 105 in your phone. It is the free number to report a power cut.
- Make your own plan to see what else your home needs.

Questions people ask
Will my boiler work if the power cut is short?
Yes, it should start again when the power comes back. If it does not, check your manual for how to reset it before you call an engineer.
Do oil boilers work in a power cut?
Usually not. Oil boilers need electricity for the burner and the pump, just like gas boilers.
Can I power my boiler from a battery or generator myself?
Do not try to wire a boiler to a battery or generator yourself. It can be dangerous. Ask a Gas Safe registered engineer and a qualified electrician.
Does a gas fire work in a power cut?
Some do, if they have a pilot light and no fan or electric ignition. Many modern fires do not. Check the manual for yours.
